Important Information

Guest Safety, Comfort, and Well-Being

 

The fire alarms are tested weekly on Mondays at 12:00.To ensure that all of our guests have a safe & enjoyable stay with us we ask that all guests follow our house rules:

  • That all guest vacate their room by 11 am on the day of departure. You can request a late checkout and keep your room until 2 pm for a fee of £15.
  • Please consider other guests in respect of noise levels. Many of our guests are families who have small children.
  • As a fire precaution, we do not allow the use of candles or other open flames within the hotel rooms. We ask for all residents under no circumstances to drape flammable objects such as towels or clothing, etc over light fittings or heaters.
  • Please refrain from smoking in all areas of the building. Please note that smoking in non-smoking areas is illegal in Scotland and offenders may be prosecuted.

Our guests are required to provide a pre-authorisation on a credit or debit card upon arrival. The pre-authorisation amount is £25 per apartment and is to cover any extras or incidents that may occur whilst you are staying with us. Please note that a pre-authorisation is not a payment and is held by your bank and will be released to you upon departure if no incidences occur whilst you stay with us. Depending on your bank the pre-authorisation may take up to 9-10 working days to be released.

We are committed to providing our customers with the highest level of service while staying true to our environmental and social values. In order to minimise our impact on the environment, we have made the decision to eliminate daily housekeeping. By reducing unnecessary power, water, and linen usage, we hope to contribute to a more sustainable future. If guests desire additional housekeeping services during their stay, our front-of-house team will be more than happy to assist upon request.

Our Digital Travel Companion

Our digital travel companion allows you to manage your reservation via your device. Whether you require information about your upcoming reservation, need to obtain an invoice from a previous stay, or want to learn more about our rooms or hotel then our digital companion makes it simple. The system also enables you to check-in and out online helping you to reduce your time at the reception desk. As well as these useful functionalities you can also add various enhancements to your stay. You will be provided with a link to our travel companion system (Voyager) within your reservation confirmation and pre-stay emails. You can access our travel companion system at any time pre-stay, whilst you are staying with us, and post-stay.

Fire

In the event of fire contact the fire brigade immediately. Dial 999 and ask for the fire service. Next, activate the fire alarms within the building by smashing one of the ‘Break Glass’ boxes located in the common landing areas. Under no circumstance should guests attempt to tackle fires themselves.

Fire Alarm Testing

The fire alarms are tested weekly on Mondays at 12:00.

The alarms will sound for about two minutes only and then will be silenced.

Should the alarms continue to sound after this time, please evacuate the building in the manner described below.

Fire Evacuation Procedure

On hearing the fire alarm, please leave your room immediately. Follow illuminated Fire Exit signs to your nearest fire exit. Do not use the lift, use the stairs.

Assembly points are in front of the hotel’s main entrance and the car park to the rear of the hotel.

Carlton Hill

Also on Calton Hill, the National Monument of Scotland is another of Edinburgh’s key landmarks. This iconic structure has in fact stood incomplete for over 200 years, as the architects were unable to raise the funds to complete the build. For this reason, some call it “Edinburgh’s Disgrace”, nevertheless is it a very popular spot for visitors and locals alike.

Greyfriars Bobby 

Candlemaker Row, Edinburgh EH1 2QE

This poignant celebration of loyalty is a firm favourite with visitors. According to the story, this loyal dog stayed by his master’s graveside for 14 years until his death. This monument was unveiled in the late 19th century and remains a popular draw for those far and wide today.

Lauriston Castle

The People’s Story

Founded in 1850, the National Gallery of Scotland and the neighbouring Royal Scottish Academy were designed by the renowned architect William Playfair. Situated right in the heart of the city centre on The Mound, the gallery is known for exhibiting the works of some of the most celebrated Scottish artists. Here you can find famous work including The Skating Minister by Henry Raeburn, and Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by John Singer Sargent.

Scottish National Portrait Gallery

1 Queen St, Edinburgh EH2 1JD

Located on Queen Street, this gallery really dedicates itself to some of the best portrait artworks in the world. As you enter the gallery you are greeted by renowned Scottish figures such as Robert Burns and famous paintings of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Sir Walter Scott. Also look out for their contemporary art work collection which exhibits portraits of well known contemporary Scots such as Sean Connery and Alex Ferguson.

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

75 Belford Rd, Edinburgh EH4 3DR

Discover a world-class collection and cutting edge art at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. The gallery is home to a range of contemporary Scottish arts collection, with more than 5,000 items of 20th-century art. The Gallery comprises two buildings, Modern One and Modern Two, which are positioned on either side of Belford Road to the west of the city centre. The National Gallery of Modern Art is surrounded by outdoor sculptures by artists such as Henry Moore, Rachel Whiteread and Barbara Hepworth, providing a unique experience to enjoy modern art for all ages.

City Art Centre

2 Market St, Edinburgh EH1 1DE

The City Art Centre provides the largest exhibition space right in the centre of Edinburgh. In this little hidden gem gallery you can find interesting exhibitions from the centre’s own collections and from all over the world. The gallery updates their collections regularly to suit all interests, with new work from local or international artists or exhibitions from other countries regularly featuring. Top tip: make sure you make it up to the higher level floors to get some fantastic views of the New Town.

Fruitmarket Gallery

45 Market St, Edinburgh EH1 1DF

The Fruitmarket Gallery is a mix of art gallery, bookshop and a cafe located behind the Waverley Train Station. Before being turned into an art gallery in 1974, the building was previously used for a fruit and vegetable market in 1983. The gallery now aims to promote both established and leading artists, as well as seek out new and emerging talents. Fruitmarket Gallery is also home to a popular café, which is great for a wee drink and a nibble if you’re feeling peckish.

The Queens Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse

Canongate, The Royal Mile, EH8 8DX

If you like art but find conventional art galleries too big and daunting, then the Queen’s Gallery is the answer, as it hosts small intimate exhibitions as part of the Royal Collection Trust. The building is a conversion of a former Holyrood Free Church and Duchess of Gordon’s School and features a beautiful teak and sycamore staircase. Previous exhibitions here included Masters of the Everyday: Dutch Artists in the Age of Vermeer and In Fine Style: The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion.

Theatres

Whether you love classic or contemporary, culture-lovers of all genres are spoilt for choice in Edinburgh. With an ever-evolving series of events, not to mention permanent exhibitions, the city has an art space, gallery, or theatre to suit all interests.

That does mean that sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin – so to get you started we’ve put together a list of just ten of Edinburgh’s must-sees for arts and theatre lovers.

Traverse Theatre

Opened in 1963, the Traverse Theatre’s original aim was to keep the spirit of the Edinburgh festivals alive throughout the year. Today it not only does that, also serving as a focal point for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, but its focus on new writing in Scottish Theatre contributes to its other aim of entertaining and challenging audiences.

Usher Hall

Scotland’s only five-star concert hall has hosted concerts year-round ranging from rock, pop, classical, jazz, world and folk music since its opening over 100 years ago in 1914. Well-loved by performers and audiences alike from all over the world, the stunning Edwardian building offers magnificent acoustics, no matter the genre.

Playhouse Theatre

Seating over 3,000, the Edinburgh Playhouse is the UK’s largest all seated theatre. Originally used as a cinema, the venue now hosts large scale touring productions and has played host to some of the biggest names in live music, comedy and musical theatre.

The theatre’s 2021 lineup sees 9 to 5 the Musical, Chicago and Riverdance, the 25th Anniversary Show, amongst others arrive into Edinburgh. Keep up to date forthcoming shows at the Playhouse on their website.

The Royal Lyceum Theatre

The Royal Lyceum Theatre is one of Scotland’s leading producing theatres, and also one of the largest producing companies in the whole of the UK. Throughout its long history, the company has welcomed many stars to its stage including David Tennant, Alan Cumming and Emily Mortimer to Tony Conti, Ian McKellan and Marlene Dietrich.

Princes Street

There aren’t many cities in the world where the foremost shopping thoroughfare boasts an uninterrupted view of an ancient castle, but Edinburgh’s Princes Street does just that! The West End

A stroll down the quaint cobbled streets of Edinburgh’s West End ‘Village’ is an absolute must. Situated only a minute’s walk from Princes Street, a delightful mix of designer fashion boutiques, organic food retailers, gift shops, flower and interior shopping awaits you.

The area’s William Street is a chic enclave of upmarket boutiques, gift shops and delis. Here you’ll find a variety of galleries, and elegant fashion boutiques, including Gallery TenOska and Frontiers. If you’re looking for designer jewellery then head over to Lily Luna or Liam Ross Jewellery. In need of a quirky card? – Paper Tiger is a treasure trove of cards and gifts for all occassions.

Sprinkled with coffee shops and restaurants, such as Roots DeliBross Bagels and Strumpets, this is a hidden gem in Edinburgh that’s definately worth exploring.

The Grassmarket and Victoria Street

Edinburgh’s Grassmarket and Victoria Street are the perfect places to spend the day discovering independent shops and fashion, from cutting edge designer to retro and vintage. A buzzing restaurant, pub and shopping area beneath Edinburgh Castle, the area is brimming with Scottish designers, artisans and independents selling world crafts, vintage clothing and antiques, as well as gourmet food in a vibrant al fresco setting.

With it’s cobbled and twisted appearance, it has been said that Harry Potter author J.K Rowling based Diagon Alley on Victoria St in Edinburgh, which is located a few minutes’ walk from the Elephant House café, where some of the famous books were penned.

A narrow, winding road with high shops on either side, Victoria Street offers a variety of independent shops, that are great for browsing, including The Red Door Gallery, a one-stop shop for local artists to sell original work, prints, jewellery and crafts, Museum Context, with is packed to the gunnels with all kinds of Harry Potter merchandise, and The Whisky Shop, which stocks a range of Scotch, Irish and worldwide whiskies. Looking for some iconic traditional Scottish tweed? Be sure to pay Walker & Slater a visit.

The Grassmarket is also home to some more quirky shops, which are great places to shop for that unique birthday gift. For the the beautiful smell of old books, be sure to make time to visit John Kay’s Shop for a unique range of antique books; Mr Wood’s Fossils is the place to go for fossils for sale, minerals, meteorites and jewellery; Fabhatrix specialise in high quality hats that you simply won’t find on the high street; while Swish stock a stylish range of gifts and accessories for all the family.

Once you’re all shopped out, enjoy a well earned rest at Maison de Moggy, Scotland’s first Cat Cafe, for a cuppa and some feline company or Mary’s Milk Bar for some exceptionally tasty homemade gelato.

Stockbridge

Stockbridge has a great mix of jewellers, galleries, second hand and gourmet food shops complemented by cosy cafes and restaurants. The weekly Sunday Stockbridge Market is a focal point for residents and visitors alike with a feast of fresh produce, artisan bakers and craft produce.

The area is home to a wide range of delicious delis and food stockists, including I.J Mellis, who stock a mouth-watering range of cheese; artisan bread, preserved meats and wines can be found at Herbie of Edinburgh; and The Pastry Selection have an exceptional range of sweet treats.

Famed for its abundance of independent shops, Stockbridge is teeming with style thanks to Those Were the Days Vintage basement boutique, Treen and Willow Boutique. 

For beautiful jewellery inspired by Scotland’s landscapes try the Sheila Fleet Gallery. Bastion of old-school vinyl record shopping, Voxbox is a relatively recent addition to the area, as too is Dick’s, a bonanza of specialist clothing, accessories and homewares. Need some tranquillity? The Floatarium Spa offers sanctuary sealed through reflexology, head massage and microdermabrasion.

Bruntsfield & Morningside

This attractive leafy neighborhood is one of the most affluent in Edinburgh. Heading south from the west end of Princes Street up Lothian Road and through Tollcross you’ll come to Bruntsfield with Morningside just beyond. It’s a friendly place with plenty of cafes, pubs, restaurants and quirky shops. If you want to find an unusual gift or something special to take home for dinner – make a beeline for this area!

The Royal Mile

This historic backbone of the Old Town is an old favourite for gifts including Scottish crafts, cashmere and whisky, alongside some of Edinburgh’s oldest taverns and eateries.

While on the Royal Mile, why not pop into Cadenhead Whisky Shop, Cranachan & Crowdie and Ragamuffin which all stock Scottish produce that would be perfect for gifts.

Or, if you fancy discovering more about how Scotland’s national drink is made, The Scotch Whisky Experience should definately be on your to-do list. They have have an excellent shop, which is ideal for souvenirs.

While in the area, be sure to take a stroll down St Mary’s Street, which joins the Royal Mile at the junction with the Canongate. Here you will find small artisan shops such as Mackenzie Leathermakers of luxury bags; Scottish Textiles Showcase, specialists in luxury Scottish homeware and accessories, Gordon Nicholson KiltmakersSlanj Kilts and Kilberry Bagpipes.  Why not treat yourself to a delicious ice cream from the popular Moo Pie Gelato while you are there!

Shopping Centres 

There are lots of shopping centres in Edinburgh, each providing a wide range of High Street brands both in centre and in the outskirts of the city:

St James Quarter

Located at the east end of Princes Street, you’ll find the newest edition to Edinburgh’s shopping centres – St James Quarter. From beauty to clothing, electronics to footwear, this 4-storey centre covers 1.7 million square feet and includes restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, public spaces and leisure venues.

The centre’s car park contains 1,600+ spaces, including 70 disabled parking bays, 45 electric car charging bays, motorcycle & scooter spaces and dedicated parking spaces for families. There are also bicycle racks located in areas near the Quarter.

Ocean Terminal

At the heart of Edinburgh’s flagship waterfront regeneration, Ocean Terminal is a state-of-the-art leisure and retail complex designed by Sir Terence Conran. It boasts 45,000 sq m of shopping and leisure accommodation on three floors and 1600 car parking spaces. The mix includes more than 50 stores, bars and restaurants, a gym and a 12-screen cinema, not to mention stunning views over the Firth of Forth.

Nautical lovers should also head to Ocean Terminal to see The Royal Yacht Britannia, Her Majesty The Queen’s former floating palace for over 40 years, which is now permanently berthed in Edinburgh.

The Gyle

Spanning 20 hectares with 27,870sq m of retail space, The Gyle is a flagship shopping centre to the west of Edinburgh city centre close to the airport and city bypass. It has 2,500 car parking spaces and more than 600,000 people living within a 20 minute drive. The centre accommodates more than 45 shops and food outlets.

Waverley Mall

With direct access onto both Princes Street and into Edinburgh Waverley Train Station, Waverley Mall is an ideally located shopping destination. It’s the perfect place to stop by for fashion, food and a last minute Scottish souvenir before catching your train.

Fort Kinnaird

With over 70 branded and high street shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as gym and cinema, Fort Kinnaird has all your shopping needs in one great outdoor shopping destination, which is also open late 7 days per week.. About 25 minutes drive from the city centre, the centre has over 2,600 free parking spaces, as well as a number of bike parking locations. It is also disabled friendly with a Changing Places facility and shopmobility services.

Craigleith Retail Park

On South Groathill Road, Craigleith Retail Park is easily reached by car, bike or foot. The park is well served by public transport, with Lothian Buses 24, 37, 38, 41, 42 and 113 all providing services to the park. The park has a variety of home, fashion and food outlets.

Cameron Toll

1½ miles from Edinburgh’s city centre, Cameron Toll has free parking, together with late night shopping on Thursday and Friday. You’ll find homewares, fashion and food retailers all accommodated here.

Livingston Designer Outlet

Approximately 50 minutes from Edinburgh is Livingston Designer Outlet, Scotland’s largest designer outlet. Home to a wide range of stores, with up to 60% savings, from iconic brands such as Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger to high-street favourites like M&S and Next, they’re sure to have something to suit all tastes and budgets.

The centre is also home to an 8-screen digital Vue Cinema, two 18 hole adventure golf courses and a range of restaurants and cafés.

Free parking is available daily from 6pm to 8am, however a charge applies outside these times.

Locally sourced produce is featured throughout the menu: hand-dived scallops from the Isle of Mull, 35-day aged grass-fed British beef, and rare, locally-sourced whisky.

With intimate booths for the evening, sunny tables for two under the huge sky-lights, or seats near the kitchen pass next to all the action, Hawksmoor is the ideal spot to dine with colleagues and loved ones alike.

Pomegranate

Get a taste of great Middle Eastern cuisine at Pomegranate. With an ideal location just across the road from the Edinburgh Playhouse, it’s a fantastic option for a pre-theatre meal. If the menu is new to you, we recommend trying the mezze deal, which allows you to sample lots of different dishes in a tapas dining style. Dishes we love include the vegetable kubba, the battata harra and the soujuk, a lovely comforting Lebanese sausage stew with tomatoes, peppers and garlic.

Mums Great Comfort Food

Right beside Picardy Place roundabout you’ll find meat-lovers heaven, Steak. Their expert chefs are dedicated to providing the best steak in town, with a selection of cuts cooked just the way you like it. If you feel a little out of your depth, the knowledgeable staff will be able to talk you through the cuts on offer and recommend the best way to order it cooked. If you have room afterwards, be sure to take a look at their delicious dessert menu – the dark chocolate delice is a fabulous decadent treat.

Cafe St Honore

Venture down a cobbled New Town lane to find this romantic slice of France. Chef Neil Forbes’ quintessentially Parisian-style café champions sustainable local produce. The menus have evolved to showcase the best of seasonal Scottish produce both farmed and foraged, such as razor clams from the east coast and delicate organic chicken livers from Perthshire. They also change daily ensuring you will always find something new and seasonal to try. Desserts are also distinctly French and could feature a dark chocolate pithivier, or rhubarb parfait, and there’s always the classic crème brûlée. Delicious way to experience a taste of Paris while enjoying some of Scotland’s best produce.

Aizle

Be prepared to be daring when you visit this South Side spot. Aizle has no traditional menu instead diners are presented with a list of potential ingredients and asked to cross off any they don’t like. From this alone chef Stuart Ralston then creates your dinner! With no restrictions, the Aizle team has the freedom to utilise the best produce from local farms and suppliers and the adventurous customer benefits by knowing everything on their plate is at the height of its freshness and seasonality.

The Gardener’s Cottage

This quirky restaurant is housed in an historic building located in Royal Terrace Gardens at the foot of Calton Hill in the heart of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. Co-owned by chefs Dale Mailley and Edward Murray, The Gardener’s Cottage is committed to creating and serving excellent food using the best seasonal, local produce while nurturing sustainable and mutually beneficial relationships with the local community and local producers. The Gardner’s Cottage stands out from the crowd for two reasons; the kitchen garden nestled beside one of Edinburgh’s busiest thoroughfares growing a variety of herbs, legumes, leaves and edible flowers. Secondly the dining room layout is a little different, no individual tables but long trestles where you sit shoulder to shoulder with other patrons.

Bodega

Started by two Edinburgh locals saddened by the lack of US style tacos in the UK! Bodega is Edinburgh’s first dedicated taqueria nestled between Leith Walk and the city centre hidden away at 62 Elm Row. Serving Mexican inspired food chopped-up with worldwide flavours from Korea to the Caribbean  – if you have ever been L.A. or San Fran you’ll know what it’s all about. Everything is made fresh to order and it’s also one of the only places you can get Jarritos in Edinburgh.

The Blackbird

Brought to us by the team behind Treacle on Broughton Street and Hamilton’s in Stockbridge, The Blackbird offers style and substance in equal measure.  The design and décor are comfortably cool and effortlessly stylish so much so the bar has been a winner of the coveted ‘Most Stylish Bar’ at the Scottish Style Awards. But don’t be distracted by the terribly trendy interior (although that’s easily done) as the gastro influenced menu is a triumph and their award winning cocktails, expertly mixed by their team of top mixologists, is well worth your attention.

Contini Cannonball Bar

Located in the heart of the historic Old Town, a stone’s throw from Edinburgh Castle, Cannonball House is a characterful three-storey eating and drinking experience which takes its name from the cannonball shot lodged in the wall facing the castle.

The newly-opened Cannonball Bar is the perfect place to soak up the electric atmosphere of Edinburgh, with the great views of The Royal Mile. The bar offers a selection of over 120 of the finest malt whiskies, including the full Glengoyne and Tamdhu collections, and a contemporary menu of lunch meals and light bites.

The Devil’s Advocate

The Devil’s Advocate, from Stu McCluskey the entrepreneur behind Edinburgh’s acclaimed Bon Vivant, is a go to spot for weary wanderers in the Old Town. Tucked down Advoactes Close in an old Victorian pump house, this stylish bar and restaurant focuses on local and seasonal produce, with more than a splash of whisky on the menu (over 200 in fact).

Top Tip: Not a Whisky fan? Never fear, there’s also an extensive seasonal cocktail menu and wide selection of craft beers on offer.

The Lucky Liquor Co

If you’re looking for cocktails in Edinburgh, The Lucky Liquor Co points the way, literally – there’s has a bright neon sign pointing to the entrance of this Queen Street bar. Lucky Liquor isn’t afraid to push the boat out with its flavour combinations and presentation so if you’re looking for cocktails with added “va-va-voom” this is the place for you. The menu changes regularly as well so new suprises often await.

Paradise Palms

This Lothian Street bar is bursting with cool. The walls are adorned with a curious collection of wares, from boar heads to bird cages. Behind the bar you’ll find a bold cocktail menu with a fantastical variety of original concoctions.

The Cauldron

The Cauldron is a 1 hr 45 min immersive class where you wield a working magic wand and use molecular mixology to brew drinkable, fantastical elixirs. After donning a robe and receiving a magic wand, you are led to an interactive work station where you learn spellcasting 101 by pouring a welcome drink of either beer, cocktail, or mocktail. You then follow instructions to brew two of our molecular potions that change colour, bubble, and smoke. Family-friendly experiences available at select times. Walk-ins for food and drinks are welcome.
